Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a sculpture carved into the mountain rock face. It is the largest work of art in the world with the entire carving covering nearly 1,300 acres and each face measuring 60 feet tall.

Rushmore is a symbol of America's hope and freedom and welcomes almost three million visitors each year.

Mount Rushmore National Memorial sits at an elevation of 5,725 feet (1,745 meters) and is located in the beautiful Black Hills National Forest, just 32 minutes (20 miles) from scenic Custer, South Dakota via US-385.

According to the sculptor, Gutzon Borglum "The purpose of the memorial is to communicate the founding, expansion, preservation, and unification of the United States with colossal statues of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Roosevelt."

While Doane Robinson is known as the "Father of Mount Rushmore" and conceived the idea of a massive carvings, Gutzon Borglum, a famous Dutch-American sculptor, designed and oversaw the project's execution from 1927 to 1941.
